1. Can enhancement plans be good for honey bees too?

  • Yes – poor nutrition has been noted by some honey bee experts as a factor in poor honey bee health. Enhanced areas can provide additional pollen and nectar sources before and after crop bloom.

2. Are there diseases and pests that native bees can get from honey bees?

  • It is generally believed that native bees do not get diseases from honey bees and rarely get pests. In 1997 the Logan Bee Lab in Utah introduced Varroa destructor – the most destructive honey bee pest – into managed native bee colonies and found that the pest did not take to native bees.
